Popular Knowledge About Lamps

1.Common types of light sources

In our household, the common light sources include incandescent bulbs, fluorescent lights, and LED bulbs. Currently, LED lighting predominates in our fixtures.

LED light:
1.Advantages: Small size, no flicker, no UV emissions, high efficiency. Typically, mid to high-end LED products have a color rendering index (CRI) exceeding 80, and some can even reach 95. LED luminaires also have a long lifespan. They are more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. The light source of LED luminaires is composed of individual LED chips.
2.Disadvantages: High price. Replacing the light source is not very convenient, usually requiring disassembly of the luminaire to remove the original LED.
3.Application areas: Traffic lighting, indoor lighting, landscape lighting.
Incandescent lamp:
1.Advantages: Incandescent light bulbs are the closest electric light source to natural light, with color temperature typically ranging from 2700K to 4000K, making them easily acceptable to the human eye. Additionally, incandescent bulbs have relatively low flicker. They are also easy to replace by simply screwing in a new bulb.
2.Disadvantages: Incandescent bulbs consume a lot of electricity, have low luminous efficacy, and short lifespan. They are not environmentally friendly, generate high heat, have a short lifespan (around 1000 hours), emit high levels of infrared radiation, are susceptible to vibration, and have a low color temperature, resulting in a yellowish light.
3.Suitable applications: Incandescent bulbs are suitable for use in residential dining areas, bedrooms, etc.
Fluorescent lamp (also known as daylight lamp)
1.Advantages: High luminous efficiency, low energy consumption, and energy-saving. Easy to replace the light source, just need to unscrew the bulb.
2.Disadvantages: It may experience light decay, the color rendering index of fluorescent lamps is not as good as incandescent lamps; the light may flicker, which can have a certain impact on vision; in addition, there is mercury pollution in the production process and after disposal, causing environmental pollution.
3.Application range: Indoor public spaces such as factories, offices, schools, supermarkets, hospitals, warehouses, etc.

2.Common light bulb types

E27/E26/E14/12:
Among these, "E" represents the thread size, and the number represents the diameter of the thread. E12 and E26 are commonly used for 120V AC electricity and are designed for the North American market. E14 and E27 are commonly used for 240V AC electricity and are designed for other international markets.
E12 and E26
E12 is a type of lamp socket used for light bulbs. You might be familiar with the E26 lamp base, which is the standard screw-in type with a diameter of about 1 inch, commonly used for standard A19 bulbs. E12 follows the same naming system as E26, where the letter "E" stands for Edison screw base. The two numbers following the "E" indicate the diameter of the screw base in millimeters - 12 millimeters, or approximately half an inch. E12 is most commonly used for decorative candelabra bulbs. With its smaller screw base, it allows for more decorative and compact designs in carefully crafted ceiling and pendant lighting fixtures.
E12 and E14
The difference between E26 and E27
When manufactured according to the widely accepted IEC standards, E26 and E27 lamp holders actually have the same diameter specifications, ranging from 26.05 millimeters (minimum) to 26.45 millimeters (maximum). The difference between E26 and E27 lies in the minimum distance between the bottom contact (live contact) and the thread. This difference is motivated by the fact that the E26 and E27 standards are designed for different line voltage levels—specifically, 120V AC and 240V AC respectively. E26 lamps are designed for the North American market, primarily using 120V AC power, while E27 lamps are designed for other markets where 240V AC power is standard.
G4 and G9:
"G" represents the type of plug-in lamp base, and the number denotes the center distance between the two pins. The E40 lamp base is commonly used for outdoor lighting fixtures, while others are primarily used for indoor applications.

3.Wattage, lumens, and applicable scenarios

Wattage:
You can determine the suitable range of a light bulb by its wattage. You can refer to the following chart:
The living room lighting needs to be bright and evenly distributed: The living room generally occupies a large proportion of the entire house and is also the main activity area. Therefore, it requires sufficient brightness, with relatively high wattage. At the same time, a bright and transparent lighting environment will make the living room appear more spacious. Therefore, we generally recommend selecting lighting fixtures with wattages ranging from 60 to 450W.
Bedroom lighting should be soft and warm: The bedroom is only used for sleeping and resting, so the lighting needs to be gentle, non-glaring, and without glare. This kind of environment makes it easier for people to enter a state of sleep. Therefore, we generally do not recommend making the bedroom lighting too bright. Depending on the size, the wattage of the light source should be between 13-50W.
Kitchen lighting should have sufficient brightness: To some extent, kitchen lighting also falls under task lighting. However, the difference lies in the fact that the work area for kitchen lighting is relatively small and requires relatively concentrated light. For tasks like chopping vegetables and washing dishes, precise lighting is necessary to avoid unnecessary unhygienic or even dangerous situations. We recommend that localized task lighting in the kitchen be controlled within the range of 8-38 watts, which is more suitable.
Elderly room lighting should have higher wattage: Due to the generally weaker eyesight of the elderly, the same amount of light emitted by a lamp will be perceived as significantly dimmer by them compared to younger individuals. Therefore, if you want the elderly to perceive normal brightness, you need to increase the wattage of the lamps compared to what is suitable for younger people. Therefore, young people's bedroom lighting should be sufficient with 13-50W, while for older people's rooms it should be 25-100W.
Children's room lighting should be soft: Unlike elderly people, children's retinas are not fully developed, so overly bright light can have negative effects on their eyes. Therefore, the lighting in a children's room doesn't need to be too bright, and it can even be dimmed if necessary. Typically, we would choose light fixtures with a wattage range of 13-50W for a children's room.
Lumen (LM)
It is the unit of luminous flux, representing luminous intensity. The higher the lumen value, the brighter the light. In other words, under the same wattage and the same type of bulb, a higher luminous efficacy means a brighter and more energy-efficient light.Usually, the luminous efficacy of incandescent bulbs is 10-15 lumens per watt (LM/W);Fluorescent lamps have a luminous efficacy of 30-40 LM/W;LED lamps currently have a luminous efficacy of 70-110 LM/W.For example: When the luminous efficacy of an incandescent bulb is 12 LM/W, a 40W incandescent bulb has a luminous flux of 480 LM;When the luminous efficacy of an LED bulb is 70 LM/W, a 7W LED bulb has a luminous flux of 490 LM.
